Product Details
KAUFFMAN’S® Omega-3F is a unique, premium source of Omega-3 fatty acids for equine that features our proprietary blend of flaxseed, fish oil and fenugreek (3F). We have combined flaxseed and fish oil into a highly palatable, balanced source of Omega-3 fatty acids for high performance equine athletes, as well as horses provided hay and grain without significant access to pasture.
Equine Health and EFA
EFAs are considered “essential” because they cannot be manufactured by horses naturally and must be supplied by foods containing these fatty acids. EFAs are also “essential” for generating new cells and maintaining healthy functioning of these new cells. Some fatty acids exist within horses but need the chemical power of two acids to be manufactured: Linoleic acid and linolenic acid. Linoleic fatty acid is also called omega-6 fatty acid, and linolenic acid is known as omega-3 fatty acid.
Why Horses Need Equine Omega-3 Supplements
Since the best source of essential fatty acids is fish, the lack of EFAs in the horse diet is both understandable and easily rectified. Research on the health benefits of omega-3 supplements for horses indicates that:
- Mares receiving omega-3 supplements pass these fatty acids to foals in mother’s milk. Foals nursing milk from mares enriched with omega-3 fatty acids showed healthy immune systems as compared to foals nursing from mares that didn’t receive omega-3 fatty acids.
- Omega-3 fatty acid supplementation has also been shown to support normal healthy estrous cycling and reproductive function.
Feeding Recommendations for Horse Omega-3 Supplements
KAUFFMAN’S Omega-3 Supplements can be fed to foals at a rate of one scoop per day. Weanlings may be fed two scoops each day (over daily feed rations). Yearlings need three scoops of our omega-3 supplement to address their nutritional needs. Four to six scoops are indicated for stallions and broodmares, while performance horses benefit most from consuming two to six scoops daily when they are training or competing.
